The 3 angles that control how your car feels.
Toe, camber, and caster are more than alignment specs they change tire wear, stability, and steering feel.
Hey,
Most people think of an alignment as maintenance.
Something you get after buying tires, installing suspension, or hitting a pothole.
But alignment is more than that.
Alignment is one of the biggest tuning tools on a car. It affects how the car tracks, how it turns in, how stable it feels, and how quickly your tires wear.
To start, there are three main angles worth understanding:
01 / Toe
Toe controls where the tires point.
Toe is whether the front of your tires point slightly toward each other or away from each other when viewed from above.
It has a major effect on straight-line stability, turn-in response, and tire wear.
02 / Camber
Camber controls how the tire leans.
Camber is the inward or outward tilt of the wheel when viewed from the front of the car.
It affects how much tire contact you have during cornering and how evenly your tires wear.
03 / Caster
Caster controls steering feel.
Caster is the angle of the steering axis when viewed from the side of the car.
It affects steering return, high-speed stability, and how much camber the tire gains while turning.
Bonus / Ackermann
Ackermann controls how the front wheels turn together.
When a vehicle turns, the inside front wheel needs to turn more sharply than the outside front wheel because it travels along a tighter radius.
Ackermann describes that difference in steering angle. It affects low-speed turning, tire scrub, steering behavior, and how the vehicle responds through a corner.
The Big Idea
Alignment is not just about making the steering wheel straight. It is about tuning how the car behaves.
